DCD Don Cresswell
During his 35-year career in aviation Don traveled the world, finding inspiration in all cultures, foods and beauty around the globe. From drawing cars at a young age and aspiring to be an automotive designer to being introduced to Graphic Design at Skyline High School, Don pursed an Advertising major at San Jose State University. He decided, however, to go in a different direction and chose a career in Aviation. But during his extensive travels, he never stopped creating and was often found with a camera in hand. In 2015 he decided to take his passion for photography seriously, began exhibiting publicly and has since received several awards. Beyond travel, he’s continued his lifelong love for both the grace of automotive design and the challenges of cooking; passions that are evident in his respective series on those subjects. Born and raised in Oakland, California, he is now retired and lives with his wife, Donna, in nearby Castro Valley.
Artist Statement: The creative process fills me with inspiration, and I find it very therapeutic. Whether I have my camera or not I am constantly capturing images with my eyes and quite often find myself seeing the world around me through the perspective of a lens. I capture my images mindfully and let the shot draw people into that image to respectively “see through my eyes.”

Exhibition Impressions: “Don Cresswell’s recent solo exhibition at the Center for the Arts Gallery in Castro Valley was a resounding success. His large-scale photographs capture quiet moments that compel reflection. In his automobile series, a hood ornament becomes a sleek sculpture; in another frame, a loaf of bread or a freshly picked tomato takes on unexpected significance. Through his lens, Don Cresswell encourages us to see the familiar world anew. We look forward to a return visit.”
